OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

Watch Jane McGonigal: The game that can give you 10 extra years of life.  (20 minutes)

Go for a walk and think about what this video meant to you.

Journal here about that. The more detail the better!

OUTSIDE (REFLECTION)

  • The idea for SuperBetter came to McGonigal at her lowest point. She suffered a debilitating concussion that left her bedridden for three months and contemplating suicide. To heal, she created a game called Jane the Concussion Slayer. When she played the game, which saw her taking on her symptoms and conquering them as a heroine rather than a victim, she noticed she felt better. Her symptoms remained but she felt happier and her depression lifted
  • McGonigal began to research the phenomenon and discovered that there were scientifically valid reasons for why people were experiencing spiritual and emotional relief from SuperBetter
  • That reason: it encouraged what experts called “post-traumatic growth”. Post-traumatic growth is a positive side effect of suffering. People who report that disease or suffering has made them stronger and wiser, who feel more connected and more focused on their dreams and goals, have experienced this phenomenon
  • And it turns out there is a path to achieving this growth and it involves the daily affirmation of four resiliences, which are physical, mental, emotional, and social resilience. Science indicates that people that regularly boost these four aspects live a full decade longer than those that don’t
  • To experience that boost, McGonigal walks the audience through her resilience boosting game (it starts around minute 12 of the video). Just by playing along you’ll earn 7.5 minutes of your decade (through some intense math McGonigal works out how much time resilience boosters earn in an hour)

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

  • I learned more about how achieving growth involves the daily affirmation of four resiliences, which are physical, mental, emotional, and social resilience.

PRACTICE ROOM (REFLECTION)

  • The Quizlet exercises are helping me understand basic chords on the guitar and incorporate it into a pattern
  • It also becoming easier with perfect practice

CLASSROOM

Watch How Harmony Works (47 minutes)

Write notes of topics you want to remember.

CLASSROOM (REFLECTION)

  • In the late middle ages western harmony started on a journey that would take it in a completely separate direction to that of the music of other parts of the world. It discovered chords, and, over the next seven centuries, began to unlock their harmonic possibilities. Howard looks at how western harmony works, and how, in the present day, it has fused with other forms of music to create new styles. Chords led to chord progressions, and Howard looks at how familiar patterns of chord progressions give all kinds of music from classical to popular their sense of forward movement. The same chord patterns appear again and again, from Renaissance Italy to the latest chart hit. Musicians have always liked to tamper with the basic chords, and experiment with dissonance. We see how these tricks of the trade actually work, and the emotional and musical effect they have. From the folk musicians of the middle ages to Bach, Beethoven, and Wagner, from Chuck Berry to David Bowie, Hendrix to Coldplay, the same harmonic techniques surface again and again.

How to Build Self-Discipline: The Mindset Method

Go for a walk and think about the Tonic (1 chord) and the Dominant (5 chord) and how they create push and pull tension and release in composition. Also, think of songs you like and where is the tension or build-up in the songs?

Write a short reflection here about what you thought.

  • Tonic (1 and 8 chords)
    • Root note creates a feeling of resolution and stability
  • Supertonic, Mediant, Submediant (2, 3, 6 chords)
    • Moderate tension, useful for transitions
  • Dominant, Subdominant, Leading Tone (4, 5, 7 chords)
    • Create lots of tension to get to the tonic

Mr. Le Duc’s Key of C Major Notes and Chords Chart (PDF)

OUTSIDE (REFLECTION)

  • I thought the video gave insight on how to efficiently build self-discipline using the Mindset Method
  • I found the concept of discipline being represented as self-love interesting
  • I found the concept of incorporating discipline into your identity interesting

STUDIO

Watch this informative video by Jake Lizzio. Experiment with notes on your guitar and try playing along with him. If you cannot do this play just the C note or chord every time he plays it. ✔️

CONTROL ROOM

Tune your guitar, bass or keyboard. Try recording two tracks of guitar, bass, or keyboard.  One with the single notes like Jake Lizzio showed you above and a second with the lower C bass notes to make a simple progression. Remember two notes playing at the same time is harmonyKeep it simple.  Refer to your Quizlet Guitar Strings / Notes Flashcards if you need help remembering the guitar notes on the first three frets. Set a timer. Stop playing before you feel like Chewbacca below.

Write a short reflection here about what you thought.

CONTROL ROOM (REFLECTION)

  • I found the video and flashcards helpful when being able to tune and record a couple of strings on the guitar

STAGE

We will work on MusicWill.org materials when ‘on stage’.

This is the performance room for sharing and playing together.
